Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes:
Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes is a 'Food Bank Plus.' This means that they acquire food through donations and their pennies-on-the-pound purchasing power, and distribute food at 77 distribution sites throughout Kalamazoo County via their five food programs. Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes got its start in several downtown Kalamazoo congregations in the early 1980's. Today, those efforts have grown into an organization that, while no longer religiously affiliated, welcomes people of all faiths. With help from people of all beliefs and backgrounds, we provide an average of 700 people with groceries each day.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began to impact Kalamazoo in mid-March 2020, Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes has worked hard to meet their clientes’ needs in ways that keep everyone safe. They have provided 63,686 four-day food orders, served 16,388 unduplicated individuals in 5,585 households, made 6,968 home deliveries to 1,030 households and help 79 mobile food distributions throughout Kalamazoo County.

YWCA Kalamazoo:
YWCA Kalamazoo is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women, standing up for social justice, helping families and strengthening communities. YWCA serves over 10,000 people each year in all of their programs including the Domestic Violence Shelter - supported by CROP walk. Each year nearly 400 women and over 600 children stay in the YWCA emergency shelter and receive services such as legal advocacy, case management, counseling and therapy. Funds from the CROP walk help provide groceries for clients to make their own meals in a safe and healthy environment.

Open Doors Kalamazoo:
Open Doors’ Mission: Building relationships to overcome homelessness with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in response to God’s love for ALL. We have been partnering with unhoused persons for 50 years, empowering them to support themselves and secure housing. We currently do this through three programs:our temporary shelters, The Open Door Shelter for Men and The Next Door Shelter for Women; our Residence Community of affordable homes; and our Pathway Home homeownership program.

At Open Doors we provide homes for people working to rebuild their lives, but we don’t stop there. We build relationships and provide a level of personal care and support that many of our shelter guests and residents have never experienced. Through that relationship, people see themselves in a new way and begin to truly understand their own personal value within our community. This year, like most nonprofit organizations, we are in a state of unprecedented crisis, with many of the households in our Residence Community and most of our shelter guests out of work due the stay-at-home order. The need for our housing with supportive services is greater than ever. We are learning new and creative ways to stay connected to our community during this time.

It is our belief, we as a community and country will survive this pandemic. While the uncertainty is real of what will come next, we understand homeless families and individuals still need a place to call home. A home that is affordable, safe, and quality. A home where children will continue to thrive, pursue educational goals, and where parents can live “worry-free,” knowing we have and continue to address the housing crisis in our community.
