Marthas Vineyard CROP Hunger Walk

About Marthas Vineyard CROP Hunger Walk

Join us for the 34th Annual Martha’s Vineyard CROP Hunger Walk, Sunday, October 20th.

In the face of the continuing needs of hungry people around the world, in our nation, and on Martha’s Vineyard, especially in a time of natural disasters, wars, and waves of refugees, we remain steadfast in our commitment to raising money in the fight against hunger through our annual hunger walks. Over the course of our first 33 years, the MV CROP Hunger Walks have raised $658,784 to benefit the poor and hungry around the world and on our own island. Last year, we once again were one of the top walks in the nation, raising $34,065.20 – our third best total ever and 36th highest in the country. We’re grateful for all our walkers and donors who join us year after year.

FAQ’s
-When do we walk?

CROP Hunger Walk: Sunday, October 20th at 1:30 pm

We will gather at 1:30 pm at St. Augustine’s Church in Vineyard Haven. Walkers will start in two or three stages as soon as each team has assembled and checked in. At the end of the walk, walkers will be welcomed back with a Walk Day Festival with music, food, and fun for all.

For those who love MV, but live elsewhere, we are encouraging you to walk on the same day and time as we do; for those whose health or preferences suggest they walk on their own, please join us in solidarity that way.

-How many miles do we walk?
Three miles

We will walk from St. Augustine’s Church in Vineyard Haven, along Beach Road to the drawbridge, and return to St. Augustine’s Church. There will be mile markers for those who prefer to walk shorter distances.

-Who do we walk with?
We hope you will join up with friends or a group or team from your faith community, civic organization, or school.

Want to be part of a group? Check out the list of teams already started - or create your own!

-How do we register?
Register online at www.crophungerwalk.org/marthasvineyard (At the same time, set up your own page for easier fundraising.)

For help, contact Woody Bowman at mvcropwalk@gmail.com or 508-958-7058.

-Tell me more about the Walk Day Festival.
There will be music, food, team photographs, information about the fight against hunger, and recognition of stand-out walkers, donors, and island hunger champions.

-How do we raise money?
When you register online, set up a home page through CWS CROP, and your donors can go to that page to give. Also, create your own fundraising page on Facebook for an easy and effective way for donors to find you. Both of these methods will make fundraising a breeze! All online donations go directly to Church World Service, no need to collect checks and cash.
If you register offline, you may collect money directly from your donors. In either case, we will provide donor envelopes to you to collect any checks and cash that are given to you.

-How do we submit the money we have raised?
Online donors’ money is automatically routed to Church World Service. Checks and/or cash can be turned in on October 20th at the Walk Day at St. Augustine’s or to your team leader.

-How is the money used?
Twenty-five percent of the funds we raise will benefit the Island Food Pantry and the Vineyard Committee on Hunger in their services to the Island. The other funds will be used by Church World Service in the U.S. and globally for emergency food supplies, agricultural training, livestock, wells and pumps, farm seeds, and farm equipment.

Follow us on Facebook for updates, photographs from walkers, and for general information about Walk Day on October 20th and on hunger issues generally. Together we can help end hunger in our community and around the world!
